Welcome to My Book Nook
If you’ve followed my projects here at Grimshadow, you know I love diving deep into creative and technical challenges but I’m also a fan of losing myself in a great story. This little nook of my site is where I will share what I’m currently reading (or listening to). What I think about it, and some of my favorite audiobook / book recommendations for anyone looking for their next great read, or rather listen.
I’ll update this page as I go, so check back for new titles, fresh impressions, and honest takes on the books that keep me motivated.
Currently Listening To: Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson
Right now, I’m fully immersed in the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson, performed by RC Bray. In fact, I’m on book 14, and this is my third full listen-through of the series as I get ready for the latest release which should give you an idea of just how much I enjoy this universe.
What keeps me coming back is the epic scale of the story(18 core books), and the sharp engaging writing. Combined with RC Bray’s exceptional narration, which adds layers of personality and energy to every character. The dynamic between the main character, Joe Bishop, and the snarky, hyper-intelligent AI known as Skippy the Magnificent is endlessly entertaining and surprisingly deep.
If I had to pick one gripe, would be the series’ reliance on the classic deus ex machina device though, in fairness, it’s baked right into the story. (Skippy is literally the deus ex machina and that’s kind of the point.)
Whether you’re a lifelong sci-fi fan or just dipping your toes into the genre, Expeditionary Force is absolutely worth your time. It’s smart, funny, full of heart, and a very bingeable series.

- 🐉 The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini– If you’re a fan of epic quests, ancient magic, and one of the best magic systems ever created, this series is a must.
- ⚔️ He Who Fights With Monsters by Shirtaloon-The audiobook performance is engaging, the pacing is addictive, and it strikes a great balance between humor and high-stakes adventure.

Why Audiobooks?
For me, audiobooks are more than just stories they’re part of my creative process. Whether I’m working on a new coding project, designing something new, or just relaxing. A good audiobook keeps me inspired and engaged. They are a way to revisit worlds I love without stopping everything else I’m doing. A talented narrator doesn’t just read a story; they perform it, turning every chapter into a cinematic experience.
